The Mathematical Sciences Building

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) ranked the School of Mathematical Sciences in the UK top 10 for research power and market share. 88% of its research is graded as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The school has a current research grant portfolio of approximately £15.8 million.

The School of Mathematical Sciences was awarded Athena SWAN bronze status in recognition of good employment practice for women working within the school.

Research Divisions

The School of Mathematical Sciences has 7 research groups. The research our centre undertakes aligns itself with the following groups in Mathematics:

Scientific Computation

  • Focus on the design and analysis of computational algorithms
  • Research areas include computational fluid mechanics, multiscale modelling and computation, stochastic dynamics and modelling

Industrial and Applied Mathematics

  • Covers a wide range of mathematical topics and applications including engineering, chemistry, physics, industry and biology
  • Mathematical modelling of systems using equations to describe the behaviour of particles, solids, fluids or electromagnetic fields

High Performance Computer Suite

  • Capable of running at over 46 teraFLOPS the suite can do 46 trillion calculations per second
  • 1,600 processes and 110 terabytes of disc space. Equivalent to 2500 home PC’s
