The UoN Chemistry Building

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) ranked 95% of the School of Chemistry's research as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

In May 2017, the School of Chemistry was awarded Athena SWAN silver status in recognition of good employment practice for women working within the school. The school is working towards a gold award in 2020.

Research Divisions

The School of Chemistry has 5 research themes and numerous research groups. The research our centre undertakes aligns itself with the following groups and themes in Chemistry:

Geochemistry Research Group

  • Focuses on the chemistry of interfaces in relation to climate change, geohazards and energy security
  • Extensive expertise in environmental science, fluid-rock interaction, diagenesis, chemo-mechanics, underground gas storage, and water treatment

Theoretical and Computational Chemistry 

  • Molecular structure and properties associated with carbon sequestration
  • Novel nanomaterials for energy storage
